Clareville Beach is great for kids because the water is very calm (being on Pittwater, not the ocean). It's also small and secluded, and feels quite private. Facilities at one end include toilets and everything you need for a picnic, like seating and a BBQ. At the other end you'll find Clareville Beach Reserve, offering another set of facilities.
Clareville is part of the Northern Beaches region but is quite out of the way. If you don't live in the immediate area, the best approach is by Avalon Parade (come from the other direction and there's heaps of hills). Parents won't appreciate the driving but the setting is beautiful, full of boats bobbing on the water and bushland everywhere.
