Helping children learn about the world, history, art and wildlife isn't a chore in Sydney given we have so many wonderful local museums and exhibitions. Kids can discover a range of exciting, interactive learning experiences in our city’s museums and attractions. Here’s our top picks for a fun and educational day out in Sydney.

1. Sydney Observatory

There’s a lot to stimulate the enquiring young mind with a visit to the Sydney Observatory. The Planetarium shows films about astronomy and space flight, and children can see the constellations mapped from dusk until dawn on the roof inside the dome. The Space Theatre has films and interactive content in 3D which really brings space to life. The Observatory also runs a program of night activities where kids can use one of the Observatory’s telescopes or bring along their own and get tips on stargazing.

2. Australian National Maritime Museum

The National Maritime Museum has something for children of all ages. Explore the submarine HMAS Onslow, a lifeboat and an unmanned lightship. Younger children will find the Viking Training School and Pirate games exciting. The museum also offers a variety of touring exhibitions at different times of the year, many of which are specifically aimed at learning via interactive games and activities.

3. Sydney SEA LIFE Aquarium

The SEA LIFE Aquarium is the perfect place to learn about Australia's ocean surrounds and the variety of life within. Visitors can go snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef exhibit and see the incredible of variety sea life in our waters. In the Discovery Rockpool and Art Aquarium children can safely interact with marine life under the supervision of qualified staff, while Jurassic Seas gives kids a taste of prehistory. And the opportunity to feed sharks from a glass bottomed boat will be an adventure for any brave young person!

4. Powerhouse Museum

Admission at the Powerhouse Museum is free for children under the age of 16, where they can discover a range of interactive learning opportunities. Permanent exhibitions include Locomotive No. 1, an introduction to the Age of the Train, and Experimentation, an interactive introduction to scientific advancements. The Powerhouse Museum does a wonderful job of bringing topics related to science, technology and the world around us to life in a way that is both educational and entertaining.

5. Museum of Contemporary Art

The Museum of Contemporary Art has activities that really help to bring out a child’s creative side. The museum holds free family art and craft sessions every weekend with activities to suit children of any age. The Art Play and Art Safari sessions introduce toddlers and younger children to the joys of creating their own work of art. The museum is home to a vast collection of art and photography and hosts numerous touring exhibitions throughout the year.

6. Taronga Zoo

Taronga Zoo is home to more than 4,000 animals, many of which are threatened in the wild. Children will adore seeing the different animals and learning about conservation via the zoos films and exhibitions. There are a range of learning environments at the zoo, including the Wild Ropes Adventure Area and chances to feed and interact with some of the animals at various times throughout the day.
