Sydney has so much to offer and believe it or not there are plenty of free things to do with kids of all ages. All you need to do is plan ahead a little and you can have some great adventures without breaking the budget.

Park Games

You don’t need to venture far from home to have a great day with your kids. Your local park can be fun and exciting if you plan ahead. Bring a ball, frisbee, cricket set or a kite for children to play with or set up games such scavenger hunt.

Print out a list of items for your children to find while at the park. Kids can play on their own or in teams. Whoever finds all the items first is the winner.

Alternatively, if you don’t have a list, get the kids to find items that start with every letter of the alphabet.

Buses, Trains & Ferries

Most kids are used to travelling by car, so why not take them on an all day adventure and experience all forms of transport. As part of Family Funday Sunday, your family can enjoy unlimited travel all day for just $2.50 per person. This includes not only the Sydney area, but also Newcastle, Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Hunter and Illawarra areas. Find out more at NSW Transport Info Website

Visit Darling Harbour

Parking in Sydney CBD can be costly, so plan your trip to Darling Harbour for Sunday and travel by public transport as part of Family Funday Sunday. Kids will love the great playground with water features and ping pong tables. You can bring a picnic and enjoy stunning city views, while the kids run around on the many open spaces. Every weekend you will find plenty of street performers and artists that will make your day even more interesting.

Discover the Rocks

Venture out to the Rocks for a great day out. You can park your car at Milsons Point, then walk over Sydney Harbour Bridge and down to the Rocks. Visit the Rocks Discovery Museum – the entry is free and there is plenty to explore. Young children can take part in challenges provided by the staff. When you are done there, just a few steps away is Sticky, the hard candy store, where you can watch the candy be made.

Dress Up Drama

Children love dressing up, so give them your old clothes, shoes and accessories and let them use their imagination to tell a story based on the outfit they are wearing. Or they can make up their own play, which you can video tape it for all to see.

Sydney Olympic Park

Sydney Olympic Park is the ultimate family destination. Take part in one of the park’s challenges – simply download the challenge file from the Sydney Olympic Park website and you are set for hours of entertainment. Or catch a free flick at Movies by the Boulevard at Cathy Freeman Park.

During school holidays you will find over 50 child friendly activities, many of them free. Whether your kids are creative, sporty or adventurous, there is plenty to keep them occupied. Check out Kids in the park website

Don't waste hundreds of dollars during the next school holidays. Instead, get a little creative and you will find plenty of free things to do with kids in Sydney.
