Surry Hills is that type of area (among the likes of Balmain, Paddington and Rozelle) that any young 20 or 30 something Sydney sider would crave to live in. These areas are hip, chic and bustling with a hub of activities from eating out to vintage clothes shopping to name, however popular Crown Street on Sydney's Surry Hills is unusually great for kids too. There are a few great places, or should we say hubs for kids to enjoy themselves in, and best of all these activities come for free, unless you happen to buy something for your child/children in a cute clothing store to be mentioned.

A glimpse of kids paradise at Crown Street

Shannon Reserve is a park situated in the busiest part of Crown Street, yet is a haven for adults and kids alike. There is an abundance of grass space, and this is quite ideal for a family picnic. Rare, yet they do happen here. Surprisingly, a decent sized playground is enjoyed here. A set of basic swings, in tandem with a miniature horse, together with a multi use area that comes with a slippery slide is enough to keep your child/children entertained for a little while.

Otherwise there is a mini-play area at the library across the road. Even better, it comes with free WiFi. Of course, the latter is more for the adults to kill some time while the kids play with the toys here. There is also an extensive selection of children's books in their junior fiction section. Otherwise, every Thursday morning is home to Rhymetime (for ages 0-2) from 10am to 10:25am, and Storytime (for ages 3-5) from 11am to 11:45am. These events are limited to 20 kids, yet bookings are not required. The library puts on these events for free.

Further on down at number 443, there is a simple memorial in memory of Surry Hills' dog, Dingo Kelpie Dasher who was (unfortunately) hit by a car about 12 months ago. If Dasher was still alive today, he would even accept pats from kids as well as adults. A great pit stop to pay respect to this loveable dog of Crown Street. Just Google 'Dasher Surry Hills dog" and you will see how popular this dog was and still is.

Finally, cross the road safely and keep walking down until you come across a chic, kid friendly clothing store called Vivid shop . Some beautiful kids clothes can be admired here, and ultimately purchased for your loved ones if you wish.
